History

Rural Development movement was started in 1948. In 1955 the department of Rural Development was amalgamated with the Department of Small Industries. In 1970 Rural Development was separated from Small Industry and as a separate department under the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs and Local Government. In 1978 Department of Rural affairs came under the Ministry of Rural Development.
Main objectives of the department are improvement of economic, social and cultural activities of rural people through village organisation, to bring into closer contact with those organisations and the various extension services of the government working in such areas.
In pursuit of above objectives department undertake the following functions. Establishment of Rural Development Societies of men and women, Training representatives of village level organisations and village level officers in community development, assisting rural development societies as works initiated by them, organisation and utilisation of shramadana for local and national development, granting financial assistance to organisation which are engaged in development activities, organising and conducting training classes in Home Economics and Needlework, providing welfare services for the development of socially handicapped community.
