History

The Department of Motor Cars was established in January 1928, for the execution of tile provinces made in the Motor Car Ordinance No.20 of 1927. This was under the registrar of Motor Cars. Subsequently, this name had been changed to the Department of Motor Transport and finally with the enactment of the Motor Traffic Act No.14 of 1951.
This department is responsible for the Administration of the said and relevant regulations made thereunder, main of the functions of the department arc making regulations of Motor Traffic and registration of motor vehicles, new owners and licensing of motor vehicles of passengers and goods transport, Issue of driving licenses, Conductor's and Ticket Inspector's licenses, certificate of eligibility for tile operation of issues for occasional services, recovery of 'Sri Tax' on motor vehicles, collection of tax on transfer of motor cars under the provisions of Motor Cars (Tax on Transfers Law No.13 of 1978
