History
The Information Department was established in 1948. It functions as a Central Agency for the preparation of publicity material requested by Government Departments on their publicity requirements, to provide Government Departments with Technical advice and assistance on Publicity matters, to provide these services to Ceylon Missions abroad, to provide machinery for the central issue of Government News, Sale of Government Publications and to provide a modicum of translation facilities. Members of the Department are present at Press Conferences of Ministers and Permanent Secretaries. All communiques of Government Departments were expected to pass through its Press Room. The Department Publishes booklets and pamphlets for various Government Departments. The Department reprints books. the copyright of which is held by the Government. It also undertakes the translation of Administration Reports for other Government Departments. The Sale of Government Publications is done by the Government Publications Bureau which is a branch of the department
