History
The Department of Co-operative Development was established in 1931. Functions of the department are organisation of co-operative societies, supervision and provision of advisory services to co-operative societies, active as wholesale supplier of consumable commodities to the retail store.
The department functioned under the aegis of the Ministry of Food and Co-operative during 1948-1951. In 1958 it was under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and in 1960 the Ministry of Food, Commerce and Trade and thereafter under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Food and Shipping during 1961-1963. It was under the Ministry of Commerce and Trade during 1965-1966 and in the years 1969-1970 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. During the years 1970-1974 it was under the Ministry of Foreign and Internal Trade and in 1977-1991 it functioned under the Ministry of Food and Co-operative.

In 1958 it was under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and in 1960 the Ministry of Food, Commerce and Trade and thereafter under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Food and Shipping during 1961-1963. It was under the Ministry of Commerce and Trade during 1965-1966 and in the years 1969-1970 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. During the years 1970-1974 it was under the Ministry of Foreign and Internal Trade and in 1977-1991 it functioned under the Ministry of Food and Co-operative.
