History

The Department of Buddhist Affairs was established on 1st June, 1981 on a Cabinet decision.
The activities under the Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance No. 19 of 1931, which functioned under the Administrative control of the Public Trustee were vested in the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs by the Amendment Act No. 18 of 1981. Thereby the supervision of the Buddhist monks which had been carried out by the Registrar Generals Department and some other activities viz;- the supervision of Dhamma Schools, holding of Dhamma Schools Examinations, Distribution of Dharnma Books, granting of financial aid for building and repairing of Temples, arranging pilgrimages to India and contributing to Cremation Ceremonies sponsored by the Government. Two Provicial Offices were opened in Kandy and Ratnapura in 1982. The Department of Buddhist Affairs functioned under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs till 1988 and from 18th February, 1989 it is functioning under the Buddha Susana Ministry.
