History
The Indian Immigrant Labour Ordinance Act No.1 of 1923 made provision for the establishment of the Department of Indian Immigrant Labour in July 1923. In 1931 this department came under the Ministry of Labour, Industries and Commerce. It was assigned work pertaining to other categories of labour in addition to Indian Immigrant Labour. In 1956, the Department of Labour came under the Ministry of Labour, Housing and Social Services. Today this Department deals with wages and other conditions of work of Labour mainly safety, health and welfare of workers in factories, rcgi stration of domestic scrvants, employment, Employment Information and Training for Employment, Industrial Hygiene and Research, Labour Welfare, work ill connection with the International Labour Organisation.
