History
The Department of Registration of Persons was established by Act No.32 of 1968, and commenced functioning from 1.10.1971.
The functions of the Department were to register all persons over Eighteen years of age who are lawful residents in Sri Lanka and issue Identity Cards to registered persons. Every person liable to be registered has to apply within the notified period.
Any person liable to be registered who enters Sri Lanka after the notified date had to apply for registration within Six months of such arrival. Similarly, any person who reaches the age of Eighteen years after the notified date should apply for registration. The department’s Head Office is situated in Colombo and the district Offices function under Government Agents of the respective districts.
