History

The Marketing Department commenced activities in 1935. It functioned as the Department for the Development of Agriculture and Marketing, from 1935 to 1947. It came to be known as the department for the Development of Marketing from 1948 onwards. Its main activities were vegetable and fruit marketing, fruit processing and canning, Sri Lanka products shop, Hospital supplies, cold Storage of vegetables, food research and marketing intelligence service. The Department was to afford facilities to producers and producer societies of vegetable, fruit and other agricultural commodities to market their produce at reasonable prices, and assist consumers to purchase these items at reasonable prices. The activities were being implemented through vegetable purchasing centres, project shops and Mahajana polas.
