History
The Office of the Commissioner of Revenue carne into existence in 1808. Although the Office was created as the Commissioner of Revenue, right from the beginning the Commissioner had been addressed as the Commissioner of Revenue and Commerce. The Commissioner was expected to visit the different parts or the island, control the abuses which occurred after the abolition of the Board of Revenue and Commerce. From January 1817 the duties of the Controller of Customs too were amalgamated to the Commissioner of Revenue and Commerce. The Office was abolished in January, 1834 on the recommendation or the Colebrooke Commission. The functions of this commission were vested on the Governor and the Civil servants.
