Administrative history
The Colombo Kachcheri was established in 1796 and it was named as a 'Collcctoratc'. This 'Collcctoratc' later became the largest Kachcheri in the Island.
A Collector was appointed in 1796 to supervise the Collection of Revenuc. Initially, Collectors were given Judicial Powers to carry out their duties but with the setting up of the Supreme Court On 23.09.1799 all Judicial Powers of the Kachcheries were vested in this Court.
The Colombo Collectorate was abolished in 1801 with the establishment of the Board of Revcnue and Commerce. It became a Collectorate again in 1802 and in 1822 Kalutara Collecrorare was amalgamated with the Colombo Collectorate.
Under Colebrooke's Reforms the Western Province was created in 1833. It consisted of the districts of Colombo, Chilaw, Puttalam, the Seven Korales, Four Korales, Three Korales and Lower Bulatgarna.
The Government Agent of the Western Province was a Member or the Governor's Executive Council. Assistant Government Agents were appointed to be in charge of Chilaw, Negombo, Kurunegala, Ruwanwella and Attapitiya. In 1845 the Seven Korales which included the Districts of Chilaw and Puttalam were vested in the North Western Province. The administrative structure of the Kachcheri was enlarged in the 20 century. An Assistant Government Agent was appointed in 1933 and An Additional Government Agent was appointed in 1938.
