History

The first Government Tourist Bureau was opened in 1937. Under the new constitution the Tourist Bureau was re-established in October 1947 as a Sub-department of the Department of Commerce. The Director of Commerce was Director of the Tourist Bureau as well and was assisted by a Tourist Advisory Board.
The Ceylon Tourist Board was established in 1966 under Act no. 10 of 1966 and consisted of seven members appointed by the minister, The main objects of the Board were: -
The encouragement, promotion and Development of the Tourist Travel and adequate efficient and attractive tourist services
The Ceylon Tourist Board Act of 1966 was amended in 1968 by the Tourist Development Act No.14 1968 and the following powers were vested in the Board.
Compulsory acquisition of land and vesting of foreshore and rest houses in the Board, Alienation of land and revision applicable to loan.
Establishment of National holiday resorts and powers and duties of the Board in such resort, protection of highways and places of scenic beauty and control of junk yard.
