History

The Ceylon Steel Corporation was established in September 1961 under the provisions of the State Corporations Act No. 49 of 1957. This Corporation was one of the projects created under the Technical Cooperation Agreement concluded in 1958 between Sri Lanka and the U.S.S.R. The Project Report was prepared in 1960, construction work commenced in 1962 and production in the Rolling Mill commenced in January 1967, followed by the Wire Mill a few months later.
There are two main production Units, Merchant Wire Rod Mill and a Wire Drawing, Galvanizing and Wire Products Unit.
In addition to rolled Wire products the Corporation also fabricates Steel Structures and manufactures Machine Tools. It also operates a Steel foundry. Besides manufacturing, tile Corporation also acts as Local Agents for Machine Tools Imported from India and the Soviet Union. The Corporation produces Iron Oxide Welding Electrodes and Soldering Lead, Gas Welding Rods and Spring Wire as ancillary by-products to cater to the needs of the Local Market.
