History

In November 1960, the government decided to establish a government organization to input and distribute petroleum products and also perform ancillary functions.
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation was established under Act No. 28 of 1961. This corporation annually commenced operations as an importer and supplier of refined petroleum products in competition with the private oil companies which operated in 1961. The corporation was Subsequently established to produce wide range of petroleum products.
Thereafter ascertain as sets of the foreign petroleum companies were vested in the petroleum corporations and the compensation was paid by the Ceylon Petroleum (Foreign claims) Compensation Act No 19 of 1965.
The corporation subsequently established a refinery to produce a wide range of petroleum products.
