History

The public electricity supply was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1875 and in the same year Electrify Ordinance No.5 was passed in the regulations. This ordinance was revised and expanded by the Electricity Ordinance No. 36 of 1906. Department of Government Electrical undertakings was formed in 1927, thereafter in 1935, the Electricity Board of Ceylon was formed under the ordinance No. 38 of 1935. In May 1937, the electricity board was dissolved and the Department of Government Electrical Undertaking was re-established. Following the government decision to purchase the electrical facility owned by the Colombo Electric Transways, the take over was effective from Ist January 1929.
Electricity Act No 19 of 1950 was passed on 1st March 1950 and in the same year the activity of this department were de-centralised which establishing this area office. The Ceylon Electricity Board Act No. 17 of 1969 was passed in the parliament and this board was established on 1st November 1969. The subsequent amendments were made to this act by the amendment act No. 31 of 1969 act No. 29 of 1979.
