History

The Bribery Act No.11 of 1954 empowered the Attorney General to indict before a Court of Law or arraying before one of the Boards of Inquiry established under the Act against any Public Servant, whom, in his opinion has a 'Prima Facie' case of Bribery. The Board was empowered to give its verdict at the end of the inquiry.
The Bribery (Amendment) Act No.40 of 1958, made provision for the establishment of the Bribery Commissioners Department. The main objective of the Department was the prevention of Bribery and the Investigation of Bribery offenses by harnessing Public cooperation and if the Commissioner was satisfied that a person had committed an offence as specified in part II of the Act, such person to be prosecuted before a Bribery Tribunal.
Further, this act empowered the Governor - General to appoint persons to form a panel of Judges. The Bribery Tribunals were constituted among the members of this panel, when necessary
