History

The new revenue district of Ampara was proclaimed on 10th April 1961. The Ampara Kachcheri took over most of the functions formerly performed by the Government Agent, Batticaloa and the Galoya Development Board respectively. Taking over the functions from the Batticaloa Kachcheri and the transfer of equipment was completed in 1962.
The Galoya Development continued to exercise its powers under the relevant act in the right bank area of the Galoya Scheme. The Galoya Development Board handed over to the new kachcheri those of its functions in the left bank of the scheme, which the latter could undertake with the provisions made available to it.
